“Yes,” I said softly. “I see.”

“Now could Rosa Bland have had that knowledge in advance? Could Vincent Frawley, or even your president, Baynard Skyvos? No, none of them could have known in advance what denominations of bills you would bring back from the bank, and thus none of them could have known in advance the size of the package. Only Neptune’s controller, Walter Muller, could have known—Walter Muller, Muller, who instructed you to obtain the money in hundred-dollar bills, and even suggested putting it in a small manila envelope.”

“But why did Rappoport try to extort money from Muller’s own company?”

“Perhaps he didn’t know Muller worked there. It might have been a bizarre coincidence. But more likely he decided to challenge Muller on his home ground, hoping that Muller would agree to pay the money for the sake of his organization. Certainly the S.S.S. was important to Muller, but his reaction was not what Rappoport had expected.”

“What will happen to the organization now, Simon?”

“I would like to think that its members have seen the foolishness of their pursuit. One does not suppress Satan by evil deeds—nor by foolishness.”

“We should be getting back,” I said. “Shelly will be worried. But one last question—how did Lieutenant Graves find his way here at just the right moment?”

“I may have told him of the meeting,” Simon Ark admitted. “There are times when we can all use a little help.”
